how practical pharmacist was born

I was biking home from work one day when the idea of 99 Practical Ways to Save on Prescription Drugs hit me.

That work day, I had saved two people money on their prescription medications. The day before, I had helped three people. I was a feeling pretty great about saving people lots of money. But then I was saddened by the thought of the millions of people out there that were struggling to afford their much needed medications. How could I possibly help them?

I needed to find a way to share what I knew to the people I couldn’t reach from behind the counter. The idea of 99 Practical Ways to Save on Prescription Drugs came easily. It’s realization was the hard part.

Like most husbands do, I asked my wife what she thought about the book idea. Regina, my wife, is a registered nurse who often cares for patients whose health has deteriorated, many times due to medication noncompliance. She understood the need for the book. Many of her patients struggle with high prescription drug costs everyday. Regina agreed that something needed to be done, a solution needed to be found, and that we could be part of that solution.

Our work began where it should, with research. We visited libraries, bookstores, and online health sites looking for whatever written material that might be of some use to anyone struggling with high priced medications. What we found was surprising. There were only a few books out there specifically about saving money on prescription drugs. They fell into two categories. They either gave general tips on ways to save or they were too in depth giving unnecessary information, long in length and too difficult to read for the layperson. The information on the internet was scattered, frustrating for anyone looking for a quick answer to their problem.

So no wonder why people are still missing opportunities to save money on their prescriptions. There wasn’t any PRACTICAL information out there. And by practical, I mean simple, quick, and easy techniques to save money on prescription drugs. Practicality is needed to get things done. And so this became our philosophy and the theme of our book.

So between working our “9 to 5” jobs, taking care of our two kids, we moonlighted on our little project. It took a lot of late nights, with a few very lazy, unproductive nights in between, but our book was realized. 99 Practical Ways to Save on Prescription Drugs was published and our consulting company, Practical Pharmacist was established.

This is who we are. My name is Noel Magsino. I am a retail pharmacist and have been for the past 11 years. My wife, Regina, as I said before, is a registered nurse who has worked in the hospital and home health setting for over a decade. We are both graduates of the University of Illinois, me from the College of Pharmacy, she from the College of Nursing. We’re regular Joes just like many of you.
